Confidence in Every Line-Up: Kyla Peterson’s Story
At Surfin Fire Oceanside, surfing goes beyond catching waves. It’s about learning how to show up, trust yourself, and feel comfortable in the water.
Kyla Peterson truly embodies this spirit.
She leads a recognized surf school at Oceanside Pier and, as a Coconut Smuggler ambassador, embodies the ocean lifestyle daily.
Rooted in the Ocean
Surfing has always been part of Kyla’s life.
Her dad, Jon Peterson, built Surfin Fire to foster safety, respect, and love for the ocean, shaping Kyla’s teaching and approach.
For her, the ocean is where everything slows down.
“It creates a space where I can be 100% present,” she says. “I feel connected and aligned.”
Even on frustrating days, Kyla sees an opportunity to grow.

What Confidence Actually Looks Like
For Kyla, confidence is not about being the best, but about presence and self-assurance in the lineup.
Confidence means paddling out, saying hi, communicating, and trusting your place in the water. It means knowing your ability without judging yourself. It means wiping out and still having fun.
That mindset did not come overnight.
There were moments when she felt like she did not belong. Crowded breaks like Lower Trestles or Swami’s felt intimidating at first.
What changed everything was something simple.
She kept going.
“The willingness to get uncomfortable is what helped me most,” she says.
Women in the Water
Kyla is most proud of nurturing a strong women’s surf community.
The energy in those sessions is different.
Women cheer each other on. They laugh. They try again. There is space to grow without pressure. To Kyla, paddling out with women is the most fun thing in the entire world.
And that shift does not stay in the water.
“The biggest change I see is what happens on land,” Kyla explains. “Surfing becomes a mirror for life.”

More than Surfing
For Kyla, surfing shapes every aspect of her life and outlook.
It teaches patience, resilience, and perspective. It reminds her that growth often comes from the moments that feel uncomfortable, and it brings people together.
“The community, the connections, the experiences… that’s what makes me feel rich in life,” Kyla says.
A Moment that Stayed
One of her most memorable sessions happened in Aposentillo, Nicaragua.
She paddled out alone. The waves were not perfect. But everything clicked.
She felt present. In flow. Connected to the moment and the people around her.
It turned out to be one of the most fun sessions she's ever had.

Routines During Ocean Days
Kyla’s routine is simple.
Slow mornings. Coffee. Journaling. A good meal before paddling out.
After long days in the sun and saltwater, she keeps it real.
Fresh water rinse. Conditioner on the ends. Let it air dry.
And one non-negotiable.
She uses Coconut Smuggler products before and after every surf session, making them an essential part of her routine.

For Anyone Just Starting
If there is one thing Kyla wants every new surfer to hear, it is this:
“This is the best journey you are about to embark on. Please don’t give up. It continues to get better, I promise.”
Part of the Coconut Smuggler Family
Kyla fully embodies what Coconut Smuggler represents. Real days in the ocean. Long sessions. Salt, sun, and everything that comes with it.
Not perfect conditions, or long routines.
Just showing up, again and again.
And learning to feel at home in the water.
